What Music Is Made Of: Melody, Rhythm and Harmony
You have been listening to music your whole life, which means you already know far more than you think — you can tell a sad song from a cheerful one, clap along without being taught, and notice when a singer comes in late. What you may not have is a set of names for the things you are noticing. This lesson gives you three, and they are the three that everything else on this site hangs from.
Any piece of music, in any style, is doing three things at the same time: it lays out one note after another, it decides when each of them happens, and it decides what sounds together. Those are melody, rhythm and harmony.
Melody: one note after another
A melody is a sequence of notes, heard one at a time, that the ear follows as a single line. It is the part you hum, and it is the part you would sing if there were nobody else to sing with — a tune has a melody even with no instruments behind it at all.
Two things make a melody what it is: which notes, and in what order. Change the order and it becomes a different tune out of the same material, which is why melody is not a bag of notes but a path through them.
Rhythm: when they happen, and for how long
Rhythm is everything about time. Take a melody and keep every note exactly as it is, but hold some of them longer and cut others short, and you have a recognisably different piece of music with an identical set of notes. That is how much of the identity lives here.
Written music carries duration in the shape of the note itself: two notes can name the same pitch and sit in the same place on the page, and one of them still lasts twice as long, because it is drawn differently. The rhythm module is where those shapes get their names.
Underneath the durations there is usually a steady pulse — the thing you tap your foot to, and the thing everyone in a room can find without discussing it. Rhythm is what the notes do against that pulse.
Harmony: what sounds at the same time
Harmony is the vertical dimension: two or more notes sounding together, and the effect that combination has. A chord is the everyday unit of it — three or more notes at once, treated as one object with one name.
This is where most of the emotional colour of a piece is decided. The same melody over one set of chords sounds triumphant and over another sounds bleak, and nothing about the melody changed. It is also the dimension that is hardest to hear at first, because your ear has spent years being trained by pop music to follow the singer, which is to say the melody, and to take everything underneath as atmosphere.
Why splitting music into three is useful
Because you can work on one at a time. A rhythm can be tapped on a table with no pitches at all, and it is still a rhythm. A chord can be held down and listened to with no rhythm to speak of, and it is still a chord. Neither of those is what a real piece of music is, and both are how a real piece of music is learned — the split is a practice tool before it is a description.
The split is not perfectly clean, and pretending otherwise would set you up to be confused later. A melody that outlines a chord is doing melodic and harmonic work with the same notes; a chord change arriving one beat early is a rhythmic decision with a harmonic effect. The three are dimensions of one thing, not three separate things stacked up. But they are the right three axes to measure it along.

- Melody is spread across three modules, because a single note has three different aspects worth practising. Reading is where notes on a page get their names, your instrument is where each of those notes lives under your fingers, and ear training is where you name what you hear without looking.

- Harmony is the chords module: how a chord is built, what makes one bright or dark, and what a chord symbol on a page is asking you for.
And this module, theory, is underneath all three at once. Note names, distances, scales and keys are the raw material that melodies and chords are both cut from, which is why it is where the trail starts.
What to take from this
You are not expected to do anything with these three words yet. They are a filing system: when a lesson later on tells you that a diminished chord sounds unstable, you should be able to place that as a fact about harmony, and when a rhythm exercise stops caring which note you play, you should know why.
