Singing an Interval: Finding a Note You Have Never Heard

The last exercise played a note and asked you to sing it. Whatever else that is, it is copying — the answer was in your ear the moment the sound stopped.

This one plays a note and asks for a different one: a third above it, or a fourth, or a fifth. Nothing plays the answer. You have to build it.

That gap is the whole exercise, and it is where singing stops being imitation and becomes musicianship. Every singer reading a part, every guitarist finding a harmony, every improviser hearing the next note before playing it is doing this and nothing else.

First, the microphone

This exercise needs to hear you, so your browser will ask permission. It is the only thing on this site that does.

What happens to the sound: it is analysed in your browser to work out what pitch you are singing. It is never recorded, never stored, and never sent anywhere. What comes out of the analysis is a single number — a frequency — which is compared against the note being asked for and then forgotten. The microphone is released the moment the exercise ends, and your browser’s recording indicator going out is the visible proof.

If you would rather not, refuse. The exercise still plays the reference note and you can check yourself by ear; nothing is scored either way.

You sing two notes, and that is deliberate

Each round asks for the reference note first, and only then for the interval. That is not a warm-up. It is the thing that makes the exercise possible at all.

You are allowed to sing in your own octave — a bass cannot reach a soprano’s octave and a soprano cannot reach a bass’s, and an exercise demanding one particular octave would be scoring range instead of ear. But that freedom has a consequence. If the exercise judged your one note against a fixed target, it would have to ignore octaves to allow it, and once octaves are ignored, a fifth up and a fourth down land on the same note name. It could not tell them apart, and direction would be untrainable.

Singing the reference first moves the measurement. The interval is measured between your two notes — from wherever you put the first one. So the octave stays free, and going up seven semitones stays different from going down five. You are being asked for a distance in a direction, and both halves are being checked.

There is a second reason, and it is the pedagogical one: you cannot measure from a place you are not standing. Singers who stall on interval work are almost always the ones trying to leap straight to the target from a note they never actually produced.

How to actually do it

Do not try to jump. Almost nobody can leap to a fifth cleanly on demand, and trying is how you end up somewhere vague and then hunt for the note.

  1. Hear the reference all the way. Play it twice if you need to. The button is there for that.
  2. Sing it, and hold it. This is the first thing the exercise asks for, and it is your anchor.
  3. Walk up to the target. For a fifth, sing up the scale — one, two, three, four, five — and stop. For a third, one, two, three.
  4. Now sing just the target, and hold that.

Step three is the one that feels like cheating and is not. It is how the interval gets into your voice in the first place, and it drops away on its own: first you stop singing the steps out loud, then you stop needing them. Skipping it early does not make it go faster; it just means you guess.

Anchoring on songs

The other way in, and one most people already have without knowing it: every interval is the opening of a song you know.

  • Perfect fifthTwinkle Twinkle Little Star, first two notes. Also the Star Wars theme.
  • Perfect fourthHere Comes the Bride. Also Amazing Grace.
  • Major thirdWhen the Saints Go Marching In, first two notes.
  • Minor thirdGreensleeves, or the two notes of a doorbell.

Pick anchors from songs you actually know rather than these — the ones in your head from childhood work far better than the ones on a list, because you can start singing them without thinking. The anchor is a starting handle, not the destination: you will stop needing it, the same way you stopped counting lines on the staff.

What counts as a hit

The same two conditions as before, and both notes have to meet them.

Close enough, meaning within fifty cents. A cent is a hundredth of a semitone, so fifty is exactly half of one — the point past which you would be nearer some other note than the one asked for.

Held, for about half a second. A voice sliding up to a note passes through the right one on the way, and crediting that would credit an accident. Landing on a note and staying there is the skill.

Expect this to be harder than the copying drill by a wide margin, and expect the third and the fourth to feel harder than the fifth even though they are smaller. The fifth is the most stable interval there is, and your ear has heard more of them than you can count.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Guessing, then correcting. Sliding around until the bar goes green trains hunting, not hearing. Decide on the note, sing it, and find out — a wrong note sung with commitment teaches you more than a right one arrived at by search.
  • Rushing the first note. It is tempting to treat the reference as a formality and get to the interesting part. It is the part everything else is measured from: land it badly and a correctly-sung interval will read as wrong, because it was correct from the wrong place.
  • Blaming your ear for your range. If the target keeps landing somewhere uncomfortable, change the octave setting. Nothing about your ear is revealed by a note your voice cannot reach.

Now play

The exercise below plays one note, asks you to sing it, and then names the interval it wants from there.

The first few will be worse than you expect, including for people who found the copying drill easy. That is the gap this exercise exists to close, and it closes with practice rather than with understanding.
