Rhythm Basics: Pulse, Bars and Note Values

Every other module on this site is about pitch — which note, how far apart, what chord. This one is about time, and time is the half of music that survives when you take everything else away. Clap the rhythm of a song you know with no melody at all and people still recognise it. Play the melody with the rhythm scrambled and nobody does.

The pulse

Put on anything with a drummer and you will catch yourself nodding, tapping a foot, or counting somebody in. What you are following is the pulse: a steady train of instants, evenly spaced, running underneath the music whether or not an instrument plays on any of them. Each instant is a beat.

The pulse is not the rhythm. The rhythm is what the notes do; the pulse is the grid they do it against. Hold on to that distinction, because everything below is defined against it — every note value is a fraction of one beat, and almost every rhythmic mistake a beginner makes is a note put down against the wrong part of the grid rather than a note of the wrong length.

How fast the pulse runs is the tempo, given in beats per minute. At 60 BPM a beat lasts a second; at 120 BPM, half a second. That number says how fast the grid turns and nothing else — it says nothing about which notes fall on it.

Bars

Beats do not arrive as an undifferentiated stream. A march gives you ONE-two-ONE-two; a waltz gives you ONE-two-three-ONE-two-three. The pulse comes in groups, and one group is a bar — also called a measure. The first beat of a bar takes the strongest accent, which is why you can hear where a bar begins without anyone telling you.

On paper, a vertical barline is drawn before each new group. It takes no time and it is not a pause: it is a fence around the beats, there so your eye can find beat one. A beginner who reads a barline as a breath will hear their own playing lurch at every one of them.

Everything in this module is in 4/4: four beats to a bar, with the quarter note taking one beat. It is the meter of most of the music most people listen to, and it is the only one these exercises use.

A note value is a fraction of the beat

Three note values are enough to play everything in this module, and each one is defined by how many beats it lasts.

  • A quarter note lasts one beat. It is drawn as a filled-in oval head with a stem.
  • A half note lasts two beats — twice as long, so half as many fit in a bar. It is drawn with a hollow head and a stem. The hollow head is the only difference, and it is the fastest thing to read on a page once you are looking for it.
  • An eighth note lasts half a beat, so two of them fit inside one beat, played evenly. It is drawn as a filled head with a stem and a flag — or, far more often, joined to its neighbour by a beam, which the next section is about.

Silence is measured the same way and is written down just as carefully. A quarter rest is one beat of silence: a beat you count, sit through, and do not play. It has a squiggle of its own and no stem, since there is no note to hang one on. Counting a rest is not doing nothing — it is the part of rhythm that beginners skip, and skipping it is why a bar comes out short.

There is one more value under all of these. A whole note fills all four beats of a 4/4 bar, and it is the one the other names are counted from: two half notes fill it, four quarter notes fill it, eight eighth notes fill it.

In English the names do the counting for you: a quarter note is a quarter of a whole note, an eighth note an eighth of one, and the fractions add up in a bar exactly the way they add up in arithmetic.

If you have read British method books you have met a second set of names for the same things: a quarter note is a crotchet, a half note a minim, an eighth note a quaver, a whole note a semibreve. Same durations, different vocabulary, and it is worth recognising both so a search result in the other dialect does not stop you.

Why eighths are beamed instead of flagged

A lone eighth note is written with a flag on its stem. Put two eighths side by side inside the same beat and they are not written with two flags: they are joined at the top by a thick horizontal stroke called a beam.

This is not decoration and it is not an engraver saving ink. The beam shows you where the beat is. In 4/4, a beam groups the notes that belong to one beat, so a bar of eight eighth notes is drawn as four beamed pairs and your eye lands on four groups — which is exactly what your foot is doing. The same bar drawn with eight loose flags is eight equally spaced marks with nothing to say which of them are the beats, and reading it means counting from the barline every time.

The rule that follows from this matters more than it looks: a beam never crosses from one beat into the next. If two eighths sit on either side of a beat boundary, they are written apart, each with its own flag, however close together they look. Beaming them would join two halves of two different beats into one visual group and hide the very thing the beam exists to show. When you see a beamed pair, you are looking at one beat. That is a promise notation makes, and this module’s drawings keep it.

What the count-in is for

Before any pattern in these exercises plays, you hear four steady clicks. That is the count-in: one full bar of the pulse, at the tempo the pattern is about to use.

It does three jobs at once. It hands you the tempo before you have to commit to anything, so your first note is placed rather than guessed. It puts the accent of beat one where you can feel it, so you know which instant the pattern starts on. And it gives you a running start — beginning cold from silence, everybody’s first note is late, and one bar of nothing is enough to be moving before it counts.

Count out loud along with it if you can. Saying “one, two, three, four” over the clicks and carrying the counting into the pattern is the single most effective thing you can do for your timing, and it stops being necessary long before it stops being useful.

What this exercise is measuring, and it is not only you

The exercise below measures your device as well as your playing, and you should know that before a score surprises you. Your tap takes time to travel from the screen to the page’s code, and the click takes time to travel from the code out of the speaker; both delays land in the same number you are scored on. Wired speakers cost a few thousandths of a second and do not matter. A Bluetooth headset routinely adds more than a tenth of a second — over twice the width of the window this exercise calls being on the beat — and none of that is your rhythm; it is the radio link. That is exactly what the warm-up at the start is for: eight steady clicks that you tap along with, so the site can measure how late your taps come back and subtract that from everything you do afterwards. If your device turns out to be too erratic to measure at all, the exercise says so and plays the rounds without scoring them, because a score it cannot stand behind is worse than no score. So if a result feels unfair, look at what you are listening on first — and if you can, use the speaker or a wired pair of headphones, which is the shortest path from the click to your ear.

Now play

The round below plays a count-in, then a short pattern of quarter notes and half notes — no eighths, no rests — and asks you to tap along with every note as it sounds.

Two things to watch for. Tap with the note, not after hearing it: waiting to confirm what you heard puts you permanently late, and the fix is to predict rather than react. And read the feedback for its direction before you read the number, because rushing and dragging are two different habits with two different cures. Landing consistently a fraction early is much closer to playing in time than scattering either side of the beat, and the round will tell you which one you did.
