Range and Tessitura: What an Instrument Can Play, and Where It Lives

An instrument’s range is every note it can produce, from its lowest to its highest. Its tessitura is the stretch inside that range where it sits comfortably and sounds most like itself.

They are not the same thing, and the difference is the whole of this lesson: a note being possible is not the same as a note being good.

The range, in actual numbers

Here is what the instruments on this site reach, counting from the lowest open string up to the highest stop the drills use:

Two things are worth noticing.

The spans are similar, and much smaller than a piano’s. A stringed instrument’s range is set by its lowest string and how far up the neck you can still play, and that arithmetic lands all three in the same neighbourhood of three octaves.

And they overlap. The guitar’s low E is one octave above the bass’s; the violin’s low G sits inside the guitar’s range, not above it. This is why an ensemble works: instruments do not stack neatly one above the next, they share territory and are told apart by tone rather than by pitch.

The keyboard drawn on this site shows two octaves, C4 to B5, because that is what fits on a screen beside a question. A real piano reaches far past both ends of every row in that table — which is the reason it needed a second clef in the first place.

Why tessitura is the more useful word

Every instrument has notes at the edge of its range that it can play and does not enjoy playing. The top of a guitar’s neck is cramped, quieter and harder to hold in tune. The bottom of a violin’s G string is thick and slow to speak. Nothing is impossible there; everything is more difficult, and it sounds like effort.

Tessitura is the answer to “where does this instrument live”, and it is a smaller window than the range. Music written inside it sounds easy because it is easy. Music written at the edges can be exactly right — a passage that strains is sometimes the point — but it is a decision with a cost, and the cost is paid by whoever plays it.

The same is true of voices, more sharply. A singer’s range might span two octaves; the part of it they can sing for three minutes without tiring is much narrower, and that narrower part is what a choir director is actually casting for.

Which is where two of the clefs got their names

This connects back to something you may have already read.

Soprano, alto, tenor and bass are voice categories, and what separates them is tessitura — not the highest note each can reach, but where each sits. Those four words came first, and instruments borrowed them: an alto saxophone, a tenor trombone, a bass guitar.

The clefs borrowed them too. The alto clef is called that because it puts the alto tessitura in the middle of the staff, and the tenor clef because it does the same for the tenor. The viola reads the alto clef for exactly this reason: its comfortable middle sits where that clef’s anchor sits.

A clef, in the end, is a tool for putting an instrument’s tessitura inside the five lines — which is the same argument the reading module made for having more than one, arriving from the other side.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Writing to the range instead of to the tessitura. The note exists. That does not mean the passage works.
  • Assuming a lower instrument cannot play high. A bass reaches A♯3, which is above the guitar’s open G string. Ranges overlap far more than the names suggest.
  • Reading a range chart as a promise. The extremes are usually reachable by an experienced player on a good instrument, and not by everyone on any instrument.

What to take from this
