Open Strings on the Staff: Where Your Instrument Meets the Page

The site has taught you two things separately. The fingerboard: where the notes live under your hands. The staff: where they live on the page. They are descriptions of the same sounds, and until they meet, reading is a translation exercise instead of playing.

The open strings are where they meet, and there are only a handful of them.

The notes you never have to find

An open string is a string sounding with nothing pressed down. On a guitar there are six, and low to high they are E A D G B E. On a bass, four: E A D G. On a violin, four: G D A E.

That is the guitar’s lowest string, played open — no finger anywhere. It is one specific pitch, E2, and it has one specific place on the staff:

One ledger line below the bass staff. Nothing about that is a convention you have to accept on faith: it is where that sound lands on the grid the last lesson described.

A piano has no open strings, and nothing here is wasted on a pianist. Your equivalent is better: every key is always available, and the anchor everyone else finds by ear you find by sight, in the middle of the instrument. Middle C does the job the open strings do.

Where they land

A violin’s four open strings fit the treble staff almost exactly. Here is the D string, sitting in the space just below the bottom line — no ledger line needed at all:

The A and the E sit inside the staff; only the low G needs help, two ledger lines down. Four strings, one staff. This is why violin music is written in the treble clef and stays there.

Now the guitar. Its lowest string is the E2 you saw above, one ledger below the bass staff. Its highest string is E4 — and that one sits on the bottom line of the treble staff:

Six strings, and the outer two are on different staves. Written honestly, at the pitch it actually sounds, a guitar needs both.

Why printed guitar music looks nothing like that

It does not use both. Open any guitar score and you will find a single treble staff.

The trick is that guitar is written an octave higher than it sounds. Every note on the page is drawn one octave up from the sound it produces, and the whole instrument lands inside one treble staff, ledger lines mostly avoided. Bass guitar and double bass do the same thing, for the same reason and by a bigger margin.

It is a convention of convenience, not a secret: without it, that low E needs seven ledger lines below the treble staff, which no one can read at speed.

This site draws where the sound is, not where the convention writes it. So the pictures above put the guitar’s low E under the bass staff, because that is the pitch. Knowing both — where it sounds and how it is printed — is what stops a real score from surprising you later.

Six anchors, and everything else is a neighbour

The point of learning the open strings first is not the six notes. It is that every other note on the instrument is measured from one of them: press the first fret and you are one semitone above the open string, the fifth fret and you are five.

A note you can find in one step from something you already know is a note you can find in time. That is the whole method, and the open strings are the six places it starts from.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Learning the string names as a word, not as pitches. “EADGBE” recited is not the same as knowing that the fourth string is a D and where that D is on the page.
  • Assuming written and sounding are the same on every instrument. They are on violin and piano; they are not on guitar or bass.
  • Skipping the open strings because they seem too easy. They are the reference every other note is found from, which is exactly why they have to be instant.
