Notes and Semitones

Look at a piano keyboard for the first time and it can seem like an overwhelming wall of black and white keys stretching in both directions. Here’s the reassuring secret: there are only 12 different notes in the entire system. The keyboard just repeats the same 12-key pattern over and over, higher or lower. Learn that one pattern and you’ve learned the whole instrument.

The 12 notes

Starting from C and moving up key by key, the 12 notes are: C, C♯, D, D♯, E, F, F♯, G, G♯, A, A♯, B — and then C again, one octave higher. Every one of those 12 steps is called a semitone, and it’s the smallest distance between two notes in this system. A tone (or whole step) is just two semitones stacked together — so C to D is a tone, but C to C♯ is a semitone.

Some of those notes have two names. C♯ is the same physical key as D♭ — sharp (♯) means “one semitone up,” flat (♭) means “one semitone down,” so C♯ and D♭ describe the exact same pitch from two directions. Which name you use depends on context, but for counting purposes they’re identical.

Reading the keyboard’s map

You don’t need to memorize 12 arbitrary positions — the black keys give you a built-in map. Black keys always cluster in groups of two, then three, repeating across the keyboard. C is always the white key immediately to the left of a group of two black keys. F is always the white key immediately to the left of a group of three. Once you can spot those two landmarks, every other note is just a short count away from them.

The octave is the point where the pattern loops: 12 semitones above any note brings you back to a note with the same letter name, just higher-pitched. That’s why the system only needs 12 names instead of an infinite list — C4, C5, C6 are all “C,” just different octaves.

Why exact counting matters

It’s tempting to eyeball distances on the keyboard, but music theory is built on exact semitone counts, not approximate ones. A distance that’s off by even one semitone is a completely different interval, and later on you’ll see that a single semitone is the entire difference between a chord sounding happy and sounding sad. Training your eye and ear to count precisely now pays off the moment you start stacking notes into chords.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping black keys when counting. Every key — black or white — counts as one semitone step. C to D is 2 semitones, not 1, because C♯ sits between them.
  • Treating C♯ and D♭ as different notes. They’re the same key. The different spelling matters for reading sheet music later, not for counting distance now.
  • Forgetting the octave repeats. If you count past B, you land back on C — the letter names cycle, they don’t run out.

Use this round purely as counting practice: find the root, count 4 keys up (remembering every key counts, black or white), then count 3 more.
