Chord Inversions
Every chord you’ve built so far has had its root sitting at the very bottom. But that’s a choice, not a rule — you can take the exact same three notes, put a different one on the bottom, and the chord keeps its identity while changing its shape entirely. That reshuffling is called an inversion, and it’s the last piece you need to recognize chords in the wild, where the root is rarely sitting conveniently at the bottom.
What an inversion actually changes
An inversion doesn’t change which three notes are in the chord — it only changes which one is lowest, in the bass. A C major triad is always C, E, and G, no matter what order they’re stacked in. What changes is which of those three ends up as the lowest-sounding note:
- Root position — the root is in the bass. C major: C, E, G.
- First inversion — the third is in the bass, with the root and fifth stacked above it. C major: E, G, C.
- Second inversion — the fifth is in the bass, with the root and third stacked above it. C major: G, C, E.
Notice the pattern: whichever note used to be lowest simply moves to the top, and the note that was second-from-bottom becomes the new bass note. Do that once and you get first inversion; do it again and you get second inversion; do it a third time and you’re back to root position.
Why inversions exist
If every chord always kept its root at the bottom, basslines would leap around awkwardly every time the harmony changed, and melodies in the upper voices would have fewer smooth paths between chords. Inversions let a composer choose a bass note that connects smoothly to the note before and after it — this is called voice leading — or build a bassline that’s genuinely melodic on its own, rather than just restating roots. A huge amount of the music you already know uses inversions constantly, usually without you consciously noticing; you just hear it as “smoother.”
How to identify an inversion
The trick is to separate two questions that feel like one: what chord is this? and what note is on the bottom? The chord’s identity — major, minor, diminished, or augmented — comes entirely from the relationship between its three note classes, regardless of order. The inversion is a completely separate fact about which of those three notes happens to be lowest right now. Once you can hold those two questions apart, spotting an inversion is just a matter of checking the bass note against the other two: if the bass is the root, it’s root position; if it’s the third, first inversion; if it’s the fifth, second inversion.
Why this matters for your ear
Root position sounds the most stable and “final” — it’s usually where a piece of music will land to signal a real ending. First and second inversions sound lighter and more in-motion, which is exactly why they’re so useful in the middle of a phrase, where you want momentum rather than a full stop. Training your ear to notice this “restlessness” versus “arrival” feeling is often more useful in real listening than counting notes, though counting is still your reliable fallback.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Thinking an inversion is a different chord. It’s the same three note classes; only the bass note changed. Don’t rename the chord — just note which inversion it’s in.
- Confusing “first” and “second” inversion. First inversion puts the third in the bass; second inversion puts the fifth in the bass. It’s easy to swap these — check which interval sits above the bass note to be sure.
- Ignoring the bass entirely. Especially with diminished and augmented chords, which can look visually similar in different arrangements, the bass note is the one detail that tells you exactly which inversion you’re looking at.
