The seven letters
The seven lettered notes run A, B, C, D, E, F, G — and then A again, one octave higher. On a piano they are the white keys, and the black keys between them are the map: C is the white key just to the left of the pair of black keys, F the one just to the left of the group of three. Learn those two landmarks and the other five fall into place by counting.
A fingerboard has no colours to read, so the landmarks are the open strings. Each one is a lettered note, and the frets climb from it a semitone at a time; the same letter turns up on more than one string, which is a feature of the instrument and not a mistake.
