The count-in
One more look at what you missed.
Before playing together, someone counts in.
A drummer clicks the sticks, or a singer calls out one, two, three, four. Everyone hears the tempo before the first note.
Four counts, then the music.
The four high notes are the count-in, at the tempo of the tune that follows.
No sound? Check your volume, and that your phone is not on silent.
What does a count-in tell you before you start?
Count with it out loud, then keep counting.
Say one, two, three, four with the high clicks. When the beat starts, begin again at one.
Four high clicks count you in. Say the numbers, then tap on every lower click.
The count-in is why your first tap can be on time.
Without it, the first note is a guess, and it usually comes late.
The count-in always goes at the music's tempo.
A slow count-in means slow music. A quick one means quick music.
A quicker count-in this time. Take the tempo from it, not from the last round.
You can use a count-in.
What you learned
- A count-in is four beats at the music's tempo, before it starts.
- Count along out loud, then start again at one.
- It is what lets your first note land on time.
