Finger numbers
One more look at what you missed.
Pianists number their fingers from 1 to 5.
The thumb is 1, the index finger 2, the middle finger 3, the ring finger 4 and the little finger 5.
Both hands use the same numbers.
Hold your hands over the keys: both thumbs are 1, and they point toward each other. Both little fingers are 5.
Right thumb on C, then one finger per white key.
Thumb 1 on C, then 2, 3, 4 and 5 on the next white keys. Play them one by one.
Which finger is number 3?
Always count from the thumb, never from the left.
On the left hand, the thumb is still 1, even though it sits on the right side of that hand.
On your left hand, which finger is 5?
Piano music prints these numbers over the notes.
A small 1 over a note means play it with the thumb. A 5 means the little finger.
Right thumb on C, one finger per key: which plays E?
You know the finger numbers.
What you learned
- The fingers are numbered 1 to 5, from the thumb to the little finger.
