What a key is
One more look at what you missed.
A key is a scale with a home note.
A song “in G major” uses the notes of the G major scale, and G is its home.
“Joy to the World” starts by walking down G major.
F sharp included, it walks down the scale and lands on G, home.
No sound? Check your volume, and that your phone is not on silent.
A song is in G major. Which of these will it use?
A key tells you two things.
Which note is home, and which seven notes the music is made of.
A piano key and the key of a song differ.
One is something you press. The other is a home note and its scale.
Play in F major: its scale, then end on F.
Remember its black key, B flat. Wander a little, then come home to F.
Which key uses only white keys?
So you can name a key from its home and its notes.
Home on F, with B flat: F major. Home on C, all white keys: C major.
A song uses F sharp and comes home to G. Which key?
You know what a key is.
