Chords in any major key
One more look at what you missed.
Two questions give you any chord of a key.
Which scale note is the root, and is that place major, minor or diminished? The key's pattern answers the second.
Chord V in three keys.
Always major, always on note 5. Only the letters change.
No sound? Check your volume, and that your phone is not on silent.
In F major, what is the root of V?
Then build the chord by counting semitones.
Major: four semitones, then three. Minor: three, then four; diminished: three, then three.
In G major, which notes make vi?
Build ii in F major: G, B♭, D.
Note 2 of F major is G, and ii is minor. Three semitones up is B♭, four more is D.
Major is 4 then 3 semitones, minor 3 then 4, diminished 3 then 3. Root lowest.
You can build the chords of a major key.
What you learned
- Find the root by counting up the key's scale to the numeral.
- The numeral tells you if the chord is major, minor or diminished.
- Then count semitones from the root to build it.
